Isn’t it Obvious?

Questions about Sarah Palin’s future political plans are ubiquitous. From the left and the right, political pundits wonder aloud if she’s really thinking about running for the office of president in 2012. And depending on the pundit, the questions over whether she will run are usually tied to reasons why she should or shouldn’t.

But missing in all this guesswork over Palin’s intentions and the weighing of the pluses and minuses of her possible candidacy is the simple fact that she’s already running for president, and so far, she’s beating Obama and the mainstream media at every turn.

Set aside the writer’s cheer-leading – which takes up a lot of the post – and you’re left with a semantic question on the definition of “running.” Palin’s directly stated that she’s considering the possibility of “making a run.” At this point on the calendar that’s as much as she or any other prospective candidate is likely to do. She’s actually gone further than most have in terms of public statements, though some have gone further organizationally. If her popularity among Republicans remains stable or improves, she’ll be “running” at least until she formally says she’s not. If her popularity among Republicans declines, it will turn out she wasn’t “really” “running” at all – she was just cashing in while she could.

It’s possible that her poll numbers will follow Glenn Beck’s ratings, not that she could get much worse on the left, or has even shown any interest in appealing to anyone other than her base.
