as we’ve no other bones to pick from and none that hi-class music, I’m gonna root round in the rock cellar.

Aja was part of the soundtrack for the time, both Karen and I consistently employed for the first time, going to the dojo all the time, giving dinner parties featuring Beqaa Valley wines – it made sense at the time.

    wines from the Valley?

all I ever got from there was blonde hash….and that was long before Aja came out and drove me to madness trying to play Gadd’s solo.

    Yeah, Wikip says

The Beqaa Valley is home to Lebanon’s famous vineyards and wineries. Wine making is a tradition that goes back 6000 years in Lebanon. With an average altitude of 1000 m above sea level, the valley’s climate is very suitable to vineyards. Abundant winter rain and much sunshine in the summer helps the grapes ripen easily. There are more than a dozen wineries in the Beqaa Valley, producing over six million bottles a year.

I’m not expressing surprise at the wine existing, but was surprised that you got hold of it.

Lebanon in the late 1970s was rather in turmoil.

the late 70s was the breathing space, between both halves of the Lebanese civil war, I admit I didn’t know about wines from the Biqua,

The “package store” a few blocks away had quite an extensive wine selection. I don’t remember the details, but if I was making stuff up to improve the story I would say the owner was Lebanese (plausible hereabouts), and recommended the wines (also plausible). With all the strife in Lebanon during the period, it seemed transgressive to enjoy the stuff.
